I like getting out and going to hard to get places, spending time in the woods, and documenting these things. I like riding bicycles, driving off road, camping. I own a 4runner, shoot film cameras, wear multi-pocketed hiking pants, boots and a baseball cap. I shaved my beard, and that’s the only thing that keeps me from being a walking, talking Colorado stereotype.
You see, for some time now, I haven’t been comfortable with my activities. While I love the woods, I almost never see anything other than white male faces on the trails and back roads. I love spending time shooting the vast emptiness of the Intermountain West, but the small towns I visit are much the same.
I’ve been doing some thinking for a while now about that. I don’t like some of the conclusions I’ve come to, and I’m still working out how to make changes. But changes have to be made.
I’ll talk more about this in depth in the future. In the mean time, I need to continue to study, read some books, and try to address the problem intelligently. Gods know there is enough ignorance loose in the world right now. I’ll try to not add to that.
Keep safe, folks. Stay healthy. It’s hard going, but the world will be a better place on the other side of this. Check on the folks you care about. Help each other. We can’t get though this only looking out for ourselves. We have to know we are all in this together, and the only way we can get through it is together.
